The '''7.62x51mm NATO''' (also known as '''.308 Winchester''' or '''7.62 NATO''') is a large rifle caliber developed in 1954, and suited for battle rifles, sniper rifles, and in '''belted form''', machine guns.

It is quite a powerful round, with whoever being on the wrong end of such a bullet may be facing quite some trouble. Its power, fame, and the kind of weapons it can be used in made the reputation of the 7.62 NATO. In Mazeworld, it is considered a high-tier caliber.

Technically speaking, the military 7.62x51mm NATO and the civilian .308 Winchester are roughly identical, and any can be fired in any .308 Win/7.62 NATO weapon.

Its ballistic performance is close to its World War II cousin it replaced, the [[.30-06 Springfield]], making it a favorite of veterans used to the old round. Introduced in 1954 with the famous [[Springfield M14|M14 rifle]] (which replaced its legendary .30-06 cousin, the [[Springfield M1 Garand|M1 Garand]]) and the no less famous [[Saco Defense M60|M60]] machine gun, the 7.62x51mm NATO round enjoyed and still enjoys popularity, as it is still a widely used round.

Primarily intended as a main infantry round to be used in battle rifles, it was then superseded by the [[5.56x45mm NATO]] with the advent of assault rifles. Capable of killing an unarmored target in one shot, and severely crippling most human-sized targets should they not wear at least [[Type 3 Kevlar vest]], 7.62x51mm NATO is as threatening as it is popular.
With the exception of the [[saco defense m60e3|M60E3]] and the [[heckler koch hk21e|HK21E]], which are belt-fed machine guns, all of the weapons using this caliber are either battle rifles or sniper rifles.<br />
As a rule of thumb, with such a caliber, there are two options available depending on the weapon (and equipped accessories) used: either firing two, or three shots to the chest, or trying to aim (best with [[Scope mode|scope mode]]) to the head, should do the job in most situations.

7.62 NATO ammunition is quite common, though belted ammo is rarer. With 16 weapons using the standard ammunition, and 2 using the belted variant, the caliber is one of the most versatile, with suitable applications ranging between close-quarter combats and precision shooting. The non-belted version can be found in boxes of either 20 or 100 rounds, while the belted rounds can be found in 200-round belts for the [[Saco Defense M60E3|M60E3]] and in 50-round belts for the [[Heckler ＆ Koch HK21E|HK21E]].
