Originally a wildcat cartridge, the purpose of .454 Casull is to be a longer and stronger version of [[.45 Colt]], being effectively a sort of ".45 Colt Magnum". The cartridge is unique in many ways - it develops an extremely high amount of pressure (60000 psi, similar to that of a rifle), requires the use of a small rifle primer rather than pistol primers, and has very much rifle-like performance out of a handgun ; capable of delivering a 250 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of well over over 1600 ft/s (~488m/s) out of a long revolver barrel.
