Welcome on the Newcomer's Guide. This page will help you prepare yourself if you are new to MazeWorld and you wish to know everything you need as a player.

Step 1: Inform yourself

The first thing to do, if the game is to your liking and you wish to participate, is to head on the FAQ. If you have more questions, head to IRC and ask questions about the game. Once you feel ready, it will now be time to think about making a character.

Step 2: Creating your contestant

Creating a character is easy and fast, so long as you respect certain conditions. Due to the nature of the game, your character, the contestant, must comply to certain restrictions.

Basic information

First and foremost, select a gender between male ♂, female ♀, otoko ☿, or futanari ⚥.

Next, think up of a name! Single-named characters are allowed as much as long form names, as long as they can be referred to with a simple, single informal name or a nickname. (If your character's name was to be something like "Maximillian", it would likely be referred to as "Max" simply. If it has a nickname, it can be used as the main referral as well.)

Next, the Contestant's species must be chosen. Human characters are preferred, though it is possible to be a halfling, a term used to refer to beings which are mostly human in physical appearance save for animal features.

List of allowed species
  • Human
    • The default and recommended race.
  • Cat-person
    • They have feline ears and one tail (race/color can be chosen), but no claws or paws. Their fangs are slightly more pronounced, and they have feline eyes.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • They have slightly more hair than normal humans, which has the texture of cat fur.
  • Dog-person/Wolf-person
    • They have canine ears and one tail (race/color can be chosen), but no claws or paws. Their fangs are slightly more pronounced.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • They have slightly more hair than normal humans, which has the texture of dog or wolf fur.
  • Fox-person
    • They have short canine ears and one tail (race/color can be chosen). Their fangs are slightly more pronounced.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • They have slightly more hair than normal humans, which has the texture of fox fur.
  • Rabbit-person
    • They have long rabbit ears and one rabbit tail, which is always white. They have slightly more pronounced incisor (front) teeth.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • They have slightly more hair than normal humans, which has the texture of rabbit fur.
  • Mouse-person/Rat-person
    • They have short mouse ears and one mouse tail (race/color can be chosen). They have slightly more pronounced incisor (front) teeth.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • They have slightly more hair than normal humans; which has the texture of mouse fur.
  • Lizard-person
    • They have a lizard tail, a thinner and longer tongue than a normal human, and reptilian eyes.
    • Their tail does not count as an extra limb.
    • Their skin is rougher, seemingly covered in scales, but is not more resilient than a normal human's.
    • Their skin color may vary, including natural human skin colors and lizard skin colors.
  • Frog-person
    • They have reptilian eyes.
    • Their skin is smooth, but feels softer than a normal human's, however it is not any weaker or less tough.
    • Their skin color may vary, including natural human skin colors and frog skin colors.
  • Para-human
    • Humans with no animal features but with blatantly unnatural traits (so long as they are cosmetic), such as abnormal skin, eye, and hair colors.

Combinations of the above are allowed, but please ask on IRC if your chosen ideas are valid.

Detailed information

After this, the following is needed:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Age
  • Skin color
  • Hair length and hair color
  • Eye color
  • When applicable, breast size
  • Cause of death (The startgame explains the contestant died in their original world and accessed Mazeworld post-mortem.)
  • Particular traits

Age restrictions: Physically, at the very least 14 years old, and no older than 65. A certain fitness and maturity are required.
Height restrictions: Avoid heights under 145 cm (4' 9") and over 215 cm (7' 1").
Weight restrictions: No overly lithe or weak characters, and nothing over the realm of overweight - adapt the weight in consequence.
Constitution restrictions: A minimum amount of physical strength is required because your contestant is likely to carry a LOT of swag, but no physically better than an accomplished athlete - no Schwarzenegger-like bodybuilders either, because they have a superhuman advantage of strength.

Backstory

It is optional, but if you have a backstory for your character, please provide it! It will adorn the contestant's very own article on the wiki and will be shown for all to see. It may be used to develop or reveal details about this contestant's past life, personality, behavior, etc, so use it to flesh your character up!

Step 3: Sign up and play!

When you're done figuring out everything for your character, fill out this application and keep it.

Afterwards, contact the author, usually through IRC, and request that your character is signed up for play, and send him your application (via pastebin is recommended), as it will lead to the creation of your very own contestant wiki article, if your application is accepted. If it is, your contestant will be added to the leaderboards and the author's personal files, and you will then be allowed to reserve games. If it is not accepted, you will be given a reason. Most often, applications are refused when they're incomplete or are missing mandatory information.

Once you are officially signed up, check the Game Schedule to pick up a date to know when to play! The days are divided in two slots, Slot 1, or Early Game, and Slot 2, or Late Game.

Step 4: Keep track!

During your progress, you will have to keep track of your character's statistics, equipment, and inventory. To avoid the hassle of reminding it in full before every session, you must make your inventory sheet and track it appropriately, changing, adding and removing to it as you play. Although Tempest also tracks your sheet, try to ask for verifications only occasionally or if you really are unsure.
