There are people who are legit scared of the youkai's powers, like magic or abilities and such. There are those who can't go past the animal bits, for those who have 'em. I've been to quite a few different worlds in my travels... including one that had a colony of mixed humanoids that managed an alliance with the native goblin tribes... after a really rough start.
