.38 Special (also referred to as .38 S&W Special, .38 Spc or .38 Spl, more rarely 9x29mm R) is a pistol cartridge designed in 1898 by Smith & Wesson. Primarily intended for revolvers, .38 Special started life as a blackpowder cartridge, before transitioning to smokeless powder one year later after its introduction. It is the most popular revolver cartridge in the world, having been (and, in some cases, still is) in service with the majority of police and law enforcement agencies on the planet. Even as higher-capacity semi-automatic pistols started rising in popularity, phasing .38 Special firearms out of military and police service, .38 Special remains widely used in the civilian market, as a popular plinking, defensive, and target shooting cartridge.
