The 7.92x57mm Mauser (Also known as 7.92mm Mauser, but also 8mm Mauser, 8x57 IS, 8x57 JS, and more) is a rifle cartridge developed by Mauser in the early 20th century, first adopted into military service as the service rifle for the German Empire in 1905. It is based on a cartridge of similar dimensions, type-designated as the Patrone m/88, after its adoption year of 1888. The m/88 cartridge featured a longer, round-nosed projectile and was loaded with blackpowder. In an effort to improve the performance of this cartridge, a new projectile was developed, the Spitzgeschoss (pointed bullet), which gave birth to the term spitzer bullet to refer to pointed bullets in general. The cartridge then transitioned to smokeless powder, thus becoming the 7.92x57mm Mauser.

A powerful and versatile rifle cartridge, suitable for use in infantry rifles, machine guns and precision rifles, 7.92 Mauser was adopted as the service rifle cartridge in a large number of countries besides Germany, and it remained in German service throughout until the adoption 7.62x51mm NATO in 1954 as part of the NATO standardization effort. It still sees great popularity in the hands of civilian shooters, particularly in Europe. Often compared to .30-06 Springfield in terms of power, 7.92 Mauser is a very popular hunting cartridge, being capable of taking about the same types of game as its American counterpart can.
