The 7.62x39mm (also known as 7.62mm Soviet) is a small rifle caliber introduced in 1944 alongside the AK-47 assault rifle for which it was developed.
It is powerful and reliable, and is considered a high-tier caliber in Mazeworld.
Real-life data
Introduced in 1944, it was first used in the RPD machine gun and the SKS rifle. Although it wasn't the caliber that defined the then-new notions of "intermediate cartridge" and "assault rifle", but certainly was the one that popularized it and started a new era in the world of firearms, alongside the weapon it was most well-known for being used with: the Kalashnikov AK-47.
The first variant of 7.62x39mm cartridges produced, and the variant used in Mazeworld, is the M43, a boat-tail bullet in a copper-plated steel jacket and a steel core. This design made the bullet extremely solid, which in turn became its flaw - the bullet wouldn't yaw and start deforming before traversing at least 30 cm (12 inches) of tissue. Unless the bullet hit a vital organ, wounds received from this bullet weren't fatal and easy to recover from.
Later, a Yugoslavian variant of the caliber called the M67 was developed - it is a shorter and flatter bullet which deforms much sooner than the M43. However, despite this improvement, it wouldn't catch on due to the fact those bullets weren't frangible - something the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber, the service caliber of the US Army, was capable of and is renowned for.
Outside from military uses, 7.62x39mm sees popular use in hunting and sport shooting, mainly due to the high availability of surplus rounds.

The former Soviet counterpart to the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber, they are no longer really comparable since the advent of the 5.45x39mm, though they are still often compared and matched due to the popularity of AK and AR-15 typed rifles.
Although unable to kill an unarmored target in one shot, the caliber has been built for automatic fire and truly shows performance when used in small, controlled bursts. In the best cases, as little as two rounds only are needed to bring down a target.
The caliber does not enjoy the same popularity as 5.56 NATO does, but isn't among the rarest either - with a fair amount of different weapons compatible with this caliber, 7.62x39mm offers moderate availability, and a good ratio availability-power. Half of the weapons are part of the AK-47 family, which makes the 7.62 Soviet caliber an interesting cartridge to use.
Ammunition can be found at random in the rooms or bought in a gun shop/weapon shop if they have compatible weapons, for the reasonable price of 2 P$/round in boxes of 30 or 150, making its price/power ratio very interesting. 7.62x39mm ammunition may also be found in the following supply crates:
- AMMO-2 crate (150 rounds)
- Type-V crate (90 rounds)
