Designed two years prior by firearm designers Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer, the general idea behind the .454 Casull is that it is a lenghtened, strengthened [[.45 Colt]] case, and fitted with a small rifle primer instead of a pistol primer. .454 Casull was made to develop very high chamber pressure (up to 65000 CUP), and is intended for large game hunting, or self-defense against large predators (Bears...).
