A slugshot (also called shotgun slug or simply slug) is a type of load for 12 gauge shotgun shells. The particular version that is standard-issue in Mazeworld are 12 gauge shells containing Foster slugs.
In a sense, slugshot can be compared to bullets, as they are essentially hunks of rifled lead made to mimic the performance of a traditional rifle. In terms of performance, it fares pretty well and delivers very respectable power, although at a somewhat low muzzle velocity. As such, it can be considered a high-tier "caliber", although the proper term would be gauge or bore diameter.
Real-life data
Shotgun shells, and subsequently, shotguns themselves, have existed since the 19th century. They have been declined in various types and versions, suited for different needs and purposes, from hunting to home defense, to military and law enforcement applications. Two major kinds of shotgun shells can be differentiated: those that contain lead shot, and slugs.
Shotgun slugs were invented by Wilhelm Brenneke in 1898, a German small arms inventor and founder of the Brenneke GmbH, an ammunition manufacturing company. He created and popularized the use of rifled shotguns for his Brenneke slugs, of which the design is still used as of today.
Slugs or slugshot, are single projectiles made of lead, made to simulate rifle-like performance with a shotgun, by offering a single, large projectile as opposed to a number of smaller ones like with buckshot. Slugshot offers better range and more power, in a narrower hit radius, akin to a rifle bullet.
Several types of shotgun slugs exist. Many of them are variations of the original Brenneke slugs, which required specific, rifled barrels made for firing slugs.
Foster slugs are designed to fit in smoothbore barrels. very common in the United States, and can be loaded in the wide majority of shotguns without the need for a barrel replacement.
Foster slugs are primarily used for hunting, having no real military application. Counter-terrorist units however may use slugs as breaching rounds, to explode the hinges off of locked doors.

Shotgun slugs are the seventh most powerful round in the game, and the best of calibers considered "high-tier". Made to kill or severely cripple anything that doesn't have minimum protection, slugs are extremely dangerous rounds that can serve as effective finishers, complementing well a couple of buckshot rounds, or another, less hard-hitting weapon.
Being essentially bullets for shotguns, they can serve as a cheap yet reliable alternative to actual rifles. Shotguns loaded with those rounds lose the advantage of wide hitting area that buckshot has, but allows for harder-hitting shots. They are treated like bullets in-game.
Slugshot is rarer than buckshot - it can only be found at random in the rooms or bought at a gun shop or weapon shop. It is never found with shotguns when the contestant finds one, and enemies seem to never use slugshot. This can be an advantage, as the contestant is unlikely to face the threat of a slug, although consequently it makes the ammunition harder to find.
At one of the aforementioned shops, its price is the same as buckshot, sold for cheap price of 2 P$ per shell, and whenever any 12-gauge weapon is available, both buckshot and slugshot will be as well. It is also possible to find slugshot in AMMO-5 supply crates - 60 of them are inside.
