A shrine maiden (also known as a miko) is a person devoted to the faith in the Cardinal Gods. They take care of shrines and protect their altars. Shrine maidens are technically members of the Maze Personnel and as such, work technically for the Game Masters, but they are known to have a true neutral stance.

Shrine maidens, as per religious tradition, are always female and virgins. The typical occupations of a shrine maiden involve distributing omikuji (japanese fortune), chasing away wicked youkai (exorcism), making offerings to the Gods, and receiving (rare) donations.

They have no particular relationships to other members of Maze Personnel, are friends of youkai and scare away wicked youkai. With other creatures, shrine maidens are mostly left in peace - only the mindless or the least intelligent creatures would become technically hostile to shrine maidens. Even then, it is quite rare.

Because the job of shrine maiden is exclusively devoted to faith, they are not paid by the Game Masters and must rely on donations to survive. Non-wicked youkai are the most frequent donators to shrine maidens in the Mazes.

Blessings

Shrine maidens have a small service available. They request donations for self-subsistence, and give a blessing to those who donate. A blessed contestant enjoys increased accuracy for 10 turns.
The amount donated is not important - all amounts result in a blessing, although the more money donated, the more impressive, which may influence the relationship with the contestant.

Notable shrine maidens

  • The Cardinal Shrine Maidens, met during Mission 8. They are regarded as the highest authority as they guard the oldest and largest shrine - only members of their family can be assigned to their position.
  • The Legendary Shrine Maiden, regarded as another high authority and as the guardian of the Legendary Weapons.

Disguise

A contestant can disguise as a shrine maiden if the following conditions are met:

  • Wearing only the clothes of a shrine maiden (backpack does not count)
  • Carrying the trademark Gohei of shrine maiden (other weapons are acceptable)

The disguise may also fail if the gender of the disguised contestant is revealed to not be female.
