The .30-06 Springfield (more rarely known as 7.62x63mm) is a large rifle caliber developed in 1906. It was the US Army's standardized cartridge for nearly fifty years, until the introduction of its successor, the 7.62x51mm NATO in 1954. It is the iconic cartridge of the most famous Allied weapon in World War II, the M1 Garand.
