The caliber's history starts in the early stages of the Cold War. The Soviet Union used, for the Second World War and the first years of the Cold War, the [[7.62x25mm Tokarev]] caliber as their main handgun cartridge, mainly for use in their famed pistol, the [[tula arms tokarev tt 33|TT-33]]. Soviet armed forces noticed shortcomings with their 7.62mm pistol, most notably the fact that it had a weak magazine catch, causing the bad tendency of inadvertently dropping its magazine during use.
