*The '''Maze Sniper''' is another Soldier variant. They enjoy a special status as they are specialized (as the name implies) in the use of sniper rifles and designated marksman rifles. Despite wearing the uniform of regular Maze Soldiers, they serve in both the regular and Death Faction branches. They are, hierarchy wise, considered to be Privates, but are paid a fixed salary of '''300 P$/day''' in exchange. It is possible for Maze Snipers to rank up and become Sergeants and so on, though doing so means integrating either faction officially, and giving up their special Sniper gear for that of higher rank officers. Despite the officially low rank, Snipers are feared and respected figures in the Mazes.
+
The '''role''' of a Maze Soldier is determined by their primary weapon, indicates what weapon type they are most proficient with, and is more or less an indication of what type of combat tactics they will employ in combat. A shotgun user does not have the same tactics or ammunition supplies as an assault rifle user.

A Maze Soldier is a member of the Maze Personnel and of the Mazes' military forces, as well as an iconic, almost ubiquitous inhabitant of Mazeworld. The unofficial motto of the Mazes military is Semper Pugnare (Latin for "Always fighting").

The tasks of a Maze Soldier are various, but the general idea is that they are the armed forces of MazeWorld and are here to defend it from menaces, monsters on the loose, renegades, and particularly, youkai activists and anyone sympathizing with them.

Depending on who one asks in the Mazes, Soldiers are known either for being violent and ruthless pawns of an iron fist ruler, or benevolent and indispensable for the Mazes' safety. The hottest point of debate regarding the military is their old and violent feud they have with youkai.

The usual tasks of a Soldier include guarding specific rooms, creature population control (colloquially known as "monster culling"), searching for and hunting down creatures deemed to be "a threat to the Mazes", such as renegade or dangerous inhabitants, strong creatures causing chaos, and so on; though since the advent of the Human-youkai conflict, fighting youkai has often been conflated with the military's main duties, even though it was never official.

Nobody knows, aside from the Game Masters themselves and Colonel Thomas Wight, what is the exact size of the military in the Mazes, but a rough estimate mentions that there are somewhere around 3700 soldiers in fourteen Barracks plus the Main Barracks, with the Main Barracks being approximately 4 times larger than a standard one.
It has been estimated that roughly one third of all Soldiers are Death Faction members.

Maze Soldiers are declined in several variants and ranks, each with varying equipment and responsibilities.

Other data

  • Can talk.
  • Hates: Youkai (in most cases). Both are the result of training and indoctrination; the degree of hatred varies from Soldier to Soldier.
  • Loyal: They are attached to their job. Contestants will have a hard time convincing them to join him/her.
  • Backup call ability: See the relevant section for detailed information
  • There are five ranks. In order from lowest to highest: Private, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Colonel. The rank of Colonel represents the rank of leader of the military; there can only be one Colonel.

Equipment

The equipment of a Soldier varies greatly; branch, rank, and role can all affect the gear a Soldier carries.

Regular forces

  • Weapons:
    • A random Class 1 or Class 2 weapon as their standard issue main weapon
    • The generated weapon also generates that soldier's Role.
  • Clothing and armor:
    • Headgear: SPECTRA helmet
    • Top: Military T-shirt (urban camo)
    • Body armor: Type-3 Kevlar vest
    • Arms addon: None
    • Bottom: Military pants (urban camo)
    • Legs addon: None
    • Footwear: Military boots
  • Formally, body armor is optional, but the standard issue is the Type-3 Kevlar vest.
  • Load-bearing equipment according to their rank, with 2 extra magazines (or equivalent) for each of their weapons
  • A Kit (@soldierkit) which has a chance of granting extra equipment.

Death Faction

The Death Faction is considered the elite of the Maze Soldiers. Considered a separate branch despite doing essentially the same job, they wear different clothing and armor, and are typically sent in more dangerous situations, or in cases needing faster and higher firepower. Death Faction soldiers are typically composed of the best recruits after training, who are recommended to join the DF rather than the regular forces.

  • Weapons:
    • A random Class 1 or Class 2 weapon as their standard issue main weapon
    • The generated weapon also generates that soldier's Role.
  • Clothing and armor:
    • Headgear: STSh-81 Titanium helmet
    • Top: Military T-shirt (desert camo)
    • Body armor: Type-4 Kevlar vest
    • Arms addon: None
    • Bottom: Military pants (desert camo)
    • Legs addon: None
    • Footwear: Military boots
  • Formally, body armor is optional, but the standard issue is the Type-3 Kevlar vest.
  • Load-bearing equipment according to their rank, with 2 extra magazines (or equivalent) for each of their weapons
  • A Kit (@soldierkit) which has a chance of granting extra equipment.

Role and kit

The role of a Maze Soldier is determined by their primary weapon, indicates what weapon type they are most proficient with, and is more or less an indication of what type of combat tactics they will employ in combat. A shotgun user does not have the same tactics or ammunition supplies as an assault rifle user.

In addition, when Soldiers progress in their career and obtain the right to purchase better gear, the Role restricts what type of weapon they can obtain. A shotgunner can only purchase shotguns, not assault rifles or sniper rifles, for example.

  • Example: Weapon category - Role name
  • Combat rifle - Rifleman
  • Conventional rifle - Huntsman
  • Grenade launcher - Grenadier
  • Machine gun - Machinegunner
  • Precision rifle - SniperV
  • Rocket launcher - Assaultman
  • Shotgun - Shotgunner
  • Submachine gun - Subgunner

In addition, Soldiers may also obtain Kits, which provide additional equipment to aid them in their current mission or assignment. While most Soldiers do not carry Kits and may simply rely on their default service equipment, there is usually at least one or two members in a squad carrying a Kit.

  • Patrol kit - 2x Military Ration - Regular + 2x different @food
  • Medic kit - 2x Bandage + 2x Paracetamol + 2x First Aid Kit
  • Support kit - 3x extra full mags (or equivalent) for all service weapons, with matching ammunition type
  • Sapper kit - 3x @wpnc4 (+ detonator, if needed)

Pay grades

  • The base pay (perceived by Regular Forces Privates) is 150 P$/day.
  • A Regular Forces Sergeant receives a pay of 300 P$/day.
  • A Regular Forces Lieutenant receives a pay of 450 P$/day.
  • A Regular Forces Captain receives a pay of 600 P$/day.
  • A Death Faction Private receives 200 P$/day.
  • A Death Faction Sergeant receives 400 P$/day.
  • A Death Faction Lieutenant receives 600 P$/day.
  • A Death Faction Captain receives 800 P$/day.

Backup calls

Soldiers of either faction can call for backup once they reach the rank of Sergeant. If backup is needed, this is when their issued mobile phones come into play. The amount of backup allotted depends on the rank of the caller:

  • Sergeants: Sends 2 Soldiers with default equipment and random weapons.
    • ETA: 2d3+1d2 turns.
    • Cooldown: 12 turns.
  • Lieutenants: Sends 3 Soldiers with default equipment and random weapons.
    • ETA: 1d3+2 turns.
    • Cooldown: 10 turns.
  • Captains: Sends 3 Soldiers with default equipment and random weapons.
    • ETA: 1d3+1 turns.
    • Cooldown: 8 turns.

Disguise

This lists only the required clothing the contestant needs for the disguise to be successful. Note that wearing a HEV Suit or an EOD Suit cancels immediately the disguise as these suits cover the entirety of the wearer's clothes and are, as such, unsuitable for disguising.

  • Maze Soldier: SPECTRA helmet, Military t-shirt (urban camo), Military pants (urban camo), Military boots
  • Death Faction Soldier: STSh-81 helmet, Military t-shirt (desert camo), Military pants (desert camo), Military boots
