The .44 AMP (also known more rarely as .44 Auto Mag) is a high-caliber handgun cartridge developed in 1971. It is considered a medium-tier caliber.

Real-life data

The .44 AMP cartridge was intended to be a cartridge with the same power and reliability of the popular and renowned .44 Magnum caliber, to semi-automatic pistols. The project, born in 1971, was intended for use in the ill-fated Auto Mag pistol.

The factory producing the Auto Mag pistols and the .44 AMP cartridges, based in Pasadena, CA, opened in 1970, the first Auto Mag pistol was shipped in 1971, but unfortunately, due to financial and technical problems, and a general wish to rush the weapons out of the door as soon as possible, the Auto Mag and the .44 AMP cartridges became more expensive to produce as time passed, until the factory declared bankruptcy in 1972, after less than 3000 pistols were produced.

To this day, .44 AMP cartridges are still produced by Cor-Bon.

How to read this?

As a high-caliber handgun cartridge, the .44 AMP has indeed very similar performance to its ballistic cousin, the .44 Magnum, being one rank below. As such, it is the 15th most powerful round in the game, and among the top five best handgun cartridges.

Just like its revolver-intended cousin, the .44 AMP's performance is, against unarmored or lightly-armored targets, quite impressive, as two or three shots are enough to take down such targets. However, as soon as it faces better protected enemies, the caliber's performance drops quickly. As such, .44 AMP can be considered a good finisher, or a reliable backup caliber.

Being a caliber exclusive to one weapon only, .44 AMP rounds are understandably rare and slightly more expensive than .44 Magnum rounds. When bought, gun shops and weapon shops sell .44 AMP in boxes of 20 or 50 rounds, for a price of 7 P$ per round; which is high but adequate to both its rarity and performance.

.44 AMP ammunition may also be found in WPN-6 crates (80 rounds) along with its intended weapon; the AMC Auto Mag.
