The 5.8x42mm (also known as 5.8x42mm DBP87 and 5.8mm Chinese) is a small rifle caliber developed in 1987 by the People's Republic of China, suited for assault rifles and light machine guns.

It is a surprisingly powerful round for its size, though it is also relatively rare. It is considered a high-tier caliber in Mazeworld.

Real-life data

The 5.8x42mm DBP87 caliber was designed between 1979 and 1987, then adopted in 1987 by the People's Liberation Army as an indigenous cartridge for use in their new family of infantry rifles - namely the QBZ-95 rifle and its variants.

DBP87 stands for "Dàn Bùqiāng Pŭtòng, 1987" (弹步枪普通), which means "Standard rifle cartridge, (model of) 1987". It was designed to replace 7.62x39mm as the standard infantry rifle caliber in the Chinese military, in an effort of modernization. Along with it, the QBZ-95 rifle was designed around that caliber, intended to replace the aging Norinco Type 56s, which are Chinese variants of the AKM, a variant of the famous AK-47 rifle.

Though very little verifiable claims about this caliber's merits exist, the Chinese military claims that it possesses more penetration than the 5.56x45mm SS109 round used by U.S. forces. A second, "heavy round" variant exists (which is the one used in the Mazes), with a heavier bullet and higher chamber pressure - this round is reported to have an effective range of 800 meters, with "excellent accuracy" at distances up to 600 meters, and the claimed capability of piercing a 3mm steel plate at 1000 meters.
