The 7.92x57mm Mauser (Also known as 8mm Mauser, 8x57mm and 8x57 IS or JS) is a large rifle caliber developed in 1905, originally intended as a main infantry rifle caliber. Nowadays, it is suited for various types of large rifles, ranging from hunting rifles to sniper rifles. In belted form, it is suited for general-purpose machine guns. It is considered a high-tier caliber in Mazeworld.

Real-life data

The 7.92x57mm Mauser caliber was developed in 1905, and was adopted by Germany as the main service rifle caliber during both World Wars, up until the downfall of Nazi Germany.

Designed as a variant of the Patrone 88 cartridge, used by the German Empire's then-service rifle, the Gewehr 1888, the 7.92mm bullet was originally round-nosed. In an effort of improving the performance of this round, a new bullet was designed, the Spitzgeschoß, the famous Spitzer bullet with a pointed profile, now an ubiquitous design of modern rifle calibers. Adopted in the new cartridge, the S Patrone, it went on to become the 7.92x57mm Mauser.

The caliber's substantially satisfying performance helped its popularization in military use, and went on to become one of the rare service calibers used by both Allies and Axis during World War I, a trait it shares with 9x19mm Parabellum. Germany was, of course, the primary user of this caliber, used the Gewehr 98 rifle series, and later the Kar98k, as well as the infamous MG34 and MG42 machine guns. The caliber was also adopted by British forces (Besa machine gun) and Egyptian forces (A modified variant of the Hakim rifle) during the World Wars.

During World War II, it was part of the "big three" of service calibers, alongside its Soviet and American counterparts.

Even during modern times, 7.92x57mm has seen military use - the Yugoslavian adopted a sniper rifle chambering the cartridge, the Zastava M76 (with a design inspired from the Dragunov), as well as a license-built version of the MG42, the M53 Šarac.

Over time, the round was called various names, such as 7.9mm Mauser, 8mm Mauser, 8x57 IS, 8x57 JS, though they more or less referred to the same cartridges.

Nowadays, it is primarily used in the civilian world, and is a popular hunting round in Europe.
