7.62x54mm R (no ontology)

From Mazeworld

7.62x54mm R (also known as 7.62mm Nagant) is a rifle cartridge developed by the Russian Empire during the late 19th century, and adopted as the main service rifle cartridge of Imperial Russia, then later the Soviet Union, in 1891. Originally called the "three-line cartridge, model of 1891", this now antiquated name has been replaced since by its metric designation.

Historically significant, this cartridge was the caliber of the famous line of Mosin-Nagant rifles, many variants of which were the standard service rifle of Russia from 1891 to 1945, until the adoption of the Simonov SKS and later the Kalashnikov AK-47, both of which are 7.62x39mm firearms. Specialized sniper variants of the Mosin-Nagant remained in Soviet service until 1963, where they were phased out in favor of the Dragunov SVD.

However, the cartridge itself did not disappear from service, with later firearms such as the aforementioned SVD, but also the PK and PKM machine gun, the already extended service life of 7.62x54mm R still continues to this day. As of 2016, it is by far the oldest cartridge still in modern military service of all time, having seen 120 years of continued use in 2011, and still counting as of 2016.

As of today, the cartridge still performs a general-purpose role similar to that of modern-day 7.62x51mm NATO, being still used in light and medium machine guns and precision rifles for snipers and designated marksmen. It also sees extensive use in the civilian market, largely thanks to the millions of Mosin-Nagant rifles that ended up as military surplus having ended up in civilian hands, as well as the billions of rounds of surplus Russian ammunition, making the acquisition of a 7.62x54mm R rifle and ammunition easy and affordable.
