The Pain rate is one of the vital statistics tracked on every contestant. Pain is affected by a wide majority of threats, including but not limited to enemy attacks, weapons, traps and various other hazards.
Rate | ≤0% | 1%;39% | 40%;69% | 70%;99% | 100;149% | ≥150% | |||||
Condition | Optimum | Normal | Hurt | Agony | Blackout | Death |
- Pain can be naturally healed, at a rate of 2% per turn. Natural healing of Pain requires 5kcal per 1%, and thus 10kcal per 2%.
- Received Pain can be prevented or reduced by wearing clothing and armor of the highest possible armor class, and it should cover the most body parts possible to ensure reliable protection.
- Pain can be treated via certain medical aids, or when meeting a nurse or a medic, for a fee.
Modifiers
Two stats can influence Pain: Maximum Pain threshold and Pain sensitivity. The former dictates the maximum amount of Pain one can take before blackout (and thus, death), and the latter is a multiplier on received damage.
- Pain sensitivity can be modified temporarily or permanently via the use of meds, Bionics, or other methods (magic, certain items or effects, etc).
- Max Pain threshold (or simply Max Pain) modifies the maximum amount of Pain needed before dying. It can only be increased via the use of Bionics or certain other methods.
Calculating damage and determining the sufferer's state:
- Check the Max Pain threshold. Unmodified, 100% represents blackout, and 150% represents death. Death always occurs at (Max Pain threshold) + 50% (unless modified by bionics).
- If Max Pain is 100%, the table above can be used as is.
- If Max Pain is superior than 100%, the difference is pushed under 0% so as to not "push" the thresholds on the table to other values.
- For example, someone with a Max Pain of 125% means that their minimum is -25%, going "past" 0%.
Effects
The effects of Pain simulate the effects of shock.
- Hurt causes reduced accuracy (FT-1).
- Agony causes further reduced accuracy (FT-2).
- blackout causes loss of consciousness, as the term may suggest.
- While in blackout, the creature loses consciousness and all awareness of its surroundings. The GM may, at their discretion, describe generally what is ongoing, but generally speaking, a creature in blackout state is totally helpless, blind, deaf, and incapable of acting or moving in any way, until death or regaining consciousness occurs. While in blackout, a creature's Pain sensitivity drops to 0% as well for as long as the blackout state is maintained; beware, as other bodily damage (limb damage, bleeding, etc.) remains possible.
- ≥150% Pain usually causes Death
