The .44 Magnum (also referred to as .44 Remington Magnum) is a high-caliber handgun cartridge developed in the inter-war period.
It is a powerful round for its category as a handgun cartridge, and is among the most well-known calibers in the world. It is considered a medium-tier caliber.

Real-life data

The .44 Magnum caliber is a large bore cartridge originally designed for revolvers, but after its introduction, was quickly used in carbines, rifles, and more rarely semi-automatic pistols.
The caliber is based on a lengthened .44 Special cartridge, much like how the .357 Magnum is based on the .38 Special. It is designed to be loaded at higher pressures and velocity than its parent caliber.

The end result of years of handmade modifications of the .44 Special, which were crafted to propel bullets at higher velocity than normal for better hunting performances, the .44 Magnum caliber was developed by a writer and outdoorsman called Elmer Keith as one of those custom handloads of the .44 Special. He encouraged Smith & Wesson and Remington to produce a commercial version of this new, high-pressure loading, as well as firearms for this caliber. The most well-known, and one of the very first firearms chambered for this caliber is the famous Smith & Wesson Model 29, popularized by action movie Dirty Harry.

The .44 Magnum was an instant success since its introduction, and more revolvers following the path of the Model 29 quickly appeared (The Colt Anaconda, etc…), as well as carbines (such as the Marlin Model 1894), rifles, and even a few semi-automatic pistols, (the .44 Magnum variant of the Desert Eagle, etc…)
