The .45 Colt (Sometimes .45 Long Colt) is a revolver cartridge developed in 1873 by Colt's Manufacturing Company. It is considered a low-tier caliber in Mazeworld.

Real-life data

Development of this cartridge started in 1871, the caliber was developed for the Colt Single Action Army. Introduced as a medium revolver caliber, it is still used nowadays by hunters, firearm collectors and re-enactors. It was adopted in 1873 by the US Army and was their official handgun cartridge for no less than 19 years, before its replacement by the much less powerful .38 Long Colt.

The round is sometimes called .45 Long Colt (and was previously designated as such on the Mazewiki itself), but this designation is incorrect, though often used. This name originates from US Army troopers calling the caliber that way to avoid confusion with the shorter .45 Schofield. Since the latter is now rarely if ever used nowadays, this distinction is now moot.

Originally a black powder cartridge, modern .45 Colt ammunition is produced with now-standard smokeless powder. The original black powder loads produced upwards of 700 joule of muzzle energy and 300 m/s (1000 ft/s) of muzzle velocity. Because of this, .45 Colt rounds were considered both powerful and very accurate, and was the most used caliber of its time, as ubiquitous as would be 9x19mm Parabellum nowadays.

Still used nowadays, almost 140 years after its first introduction, it is now used primarily in hunting, against game such as deer, and is compared to .44 Magnum in performance in this case - though the latter is much more powerful, they share a similar effective range.

The .45 Colt caliber was notable for being the basis of the .454 Casull caliber, more than 3.5 times more powerful (Muzzle energy upwards of 2600 joule), which uses a longer case, but of the same diameter; because of this, .454 Casull is to the .45 Colt what .357 Magnum is to .38 Special - a longer and more powerful cartridge, of which weapons chambered in the former can also fire the latter.
