Codeine, or 3-methylmorphine (may also be written Codein), is an analgesic drug. It is an opiate, like morphine, as the two substances are coming from the same plant (opium poppy), they are closely related. In real-life, codeine is commonly used to treat mild to medium pain, and to relieve cough, but is known for several adverse effects, such as nausea, depression, miosis, and more.

Codeine is also sometimes used recreationally; it wards off the effects of withdrawal from drugs such as heroin, and can be demethylated using pyridine to illegally produce morphine - the resulting substance can be acetylated to produce heroin.

Strategy

Codeine is one of the major analgesic (aka painkiller) drugs in Mazeworld. Like its close cousin morphine, its main effect causes Pain decreases along with other negative side-effects.

In this case, Pain is relieved by 40%, but causes a loss of strength and nausea for 2d6 turns, which may be detrimental to contestants relying on melee combat, and dangerous to those with a high Hunger stat, as nausea may cause vomiting.

Being a white tablet, it is strongly required the drug is kept until the contestant finds a medic or a peaceful scientist to identify the tablet, as it shares its appearance with Diazepam, Ecstasy, LSD, Oxycodone, Paracetamol, and a form of Placebo.
