Crafting is an aspect of the game that allows the contestant to build weapons and other useful items out of materials. Crafting remains an essentially minor aspect of the game, and is mostly very optional, although it is required for certain missions to be completed.

Crafting requires three kinds of items: a toolkit, at least one blueprint, and adequate materials.

Items for crafting can be found at random in the rooms, but they can also be found for sale in a workshop, a shop that is dedicated to this type of items.

In the Mazes, it is customary to give nicknames to weapons one has crafted himself or herself. Typically it is done by engraving a name, or a symbol somewhere on the weapon. It is possible to engrave an already existing weapon as well, for symbolic or affectionate purposes; i.e., to give a nickname to one's favorite firearm for example.

Toolkits

Toolkits are key items, as such, they cannot be lost. They are belts with lots of pouches, said pouches are themselves full of tools suited for engineering. There are three different toolkits, each corresponding to a certain level. Finding a better toolkit than the one currently equipped (if any is) will result in an upgrade of the lower one.

  • The Standard toolkit, also known as the Level 1 kit - which costs 300 P$
  • The Advanced toolkit, also known as the Level 2 kit - which costs 750 P$
  • The Expert toolkit, also known as the Level 3 kit - which costs 1500 P$
  • Upgrading from a lesser toolkit (LT) to a better one (BT) costs BT-LT=Final cost. For example, upgrading from Level 1 to Level 2 costs 750-300 = 450 P$.

Once an Expert toolkit has been found, it is impossible to upgrade anymore. It is also impossible to downgrade a toolkit.

Blueprints

Blueprints are rolls of blue paper detailing how a certain item is made, and from what materials. There are many different blueprints, and when a contestant finds one, they are always built on the following pattern:

Level n, name, Wood xx, Metal yy, Plastic zz
  • n corresponds to either 1, 2 or 3. You need a level n toolkit to build a level n blueprint.
  • Level 1 blueprints cost 100 P$
  • Level 2 blueprints cost 250 P$
  • Level 3 blueprints cost 400 P$

Materials

Finally, the last needed items to craft something are materials. There are three kinds of materials: Wood, Metal and Plastic. Every kind of material can be found in stacks of 10, 25, 50, 75 or 100 units.

An unit of material is 0.1 unit of weight - as such, 10 units of a given material weigh 1.

All materials cost the same - they're available for 6 P$ per unit, and can be sold to engineers for half this price.

Crafting-relevant items

Sometimes, specific items are needed to craft certain items, as they are required on the recipe of a blueprint. These items can be weapons, usually explosives, though there exist certain items which serve little to no other purpose than to be crafting ingredients for specific blueprints. Those items are:

  • Bottle of vinegar
  • Chlorine tablet
  • Titanium-plated jockstrap
  • Ceramic-plated jockstrap
  • Alumina fibers
  • Giant drill bit
  • Long TiN barrel
  • Long pistol slide
  • Long pistol frame
  • .454 Casull pistol magazine
  • Bottle of picric acid
  • Custom 9-round revolver cylinder
  • Tiny shotgun barrel
  • Stylish old revolver grip

Notes

  • A contestant can use crafting to build weapons instead of having to pay for them, although he/she may want to watch out if he/she plans on buying the needed components - certain weapons may be more, or may be less expensive to craft than to build.
  • A crafted firearm never comes with ammunition.
  • Once a crafted item is finished, the blueprint is kept and can be reused later to craft more of the same item.
