.45-70 Government (also known as .45-70 Gov't, or simply .45-70) is a rifle cartridge developed in 1873 by the US government, and produced by a variety of ammunition makers. It is one of the big three lever-action calibers, alongside .30-30 Winchester and .44-40 Winchester. Because it is primarily intended for lever-action rifles, and due to its large caliber, guns chambered in this caliber may be referred to under the generic moniker of brush gun, so called because the large, heavy bullets fly through foliage with little impact on accuracy, making them better for hunting in dense forests than lighter, smaller calibers.
