.577 Nitro Express (also known as simply .577 NE) is a very large-caliber rifle cartridge designed in the 1890s in the United Kingdom. .577 Nitro Express belongs to the large family of Nitro Express chamberings, which are primarily associated with African big game hunting. This cartridge, like its peers in the large family of Nitro Express calibers, is exclusively designed for single and double rifles. .577 Nitro Express in particular may, with the proper load and projectile, be used to hunt elephant, a testament to its extreme power.
