9x39mm is a rifle cartridge designed in the 1980s by a team of Soviet engineers as TsNIITochMash. The cartridge is based on 7.62x39mm, necked up to accept a 0.364" (9.25mm) projectile. Its intended purpose was to be a potent subsonic cartridge capable of delivering adequate terminal ballistics, responding to a complaint that subsonic 5.45x39mm bullets do not develop sufficient amounts of energy at subsonic velocities.
9x39mm was declined in two major versions: SP-5 ; fitted with a 259 grain FMJ bullet with lead core, and SP-6 ; fitted with a 247 grain AP bullet with hardened metal core. Other variants were later developed, but the SP-5 and SP-6 cartridges are perhaps the most commonly used.
Note: Despite virtually all 9x39mm ammunition in real life using steel cases and Berdan primers, all 9x39mm ammunition in MazeWorld is Boxer-primed and brass cased in order to facilitate handloading. The FMJ load used in the game is made to replicate as closely as possible the performance of the original SP-5 cartridge.
