.50 Action Express (also referred to as .50 AE, more rarely 12.7x33mm) is a pistol cartridge designed in 1988 by cartridge designer Evan Whildin, at the time working for Action Arms, a Philadelphia-based firearms manufacturer. .50 Action Express is one of the most powerful handgun cartridges in production, and is primarily designed to function in the Desert Eagle semi-automatic pistol. This cartridge, along with the .50AE version of the Desert Eagle, have gained almost overnight popularity thanks to pop culture, and particularly the movie The Matrix, where it was proeminently featured.
As a cartridge in the high end of the Magnum caliber power range, .50 AE develops both considerable energy and recoil, thus limiting its practical applications. Though primarily intended for target shooting, .50 AE has seen successful use in defense against dangerous animals and predators.
