A nitrous oxide inhaler is a device resembling a ventolin inhaler, similar to those used to treat asthma, but contains in fact nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide is an euphoriant, which is known for being used as an anaesthesiant in medical use. This substance is the infamous "laughing gas"; it bears this nickname due to its anaetshetic, slightly analgesic and euphoriant effects which may induce derealization (loss of grasp on reality), depersonalization (loss of self-awareness, feeling of being in a dream). This substance is one of the earliest discovered (1772) and one of the oldest substances used as both a medical and a recreational drug.

Strategy

Nitrous oxide inhalers are one of the most interesting meds of the game, valued by contestants seeking for a cheap way to secure their Pain levels. It possesses one of the most coveted effects a med can administer: complete negation of Pain sensitivity, which allows essential invulnerability to normal damage while the drug lasts.

However, this very interesting effect is countered by two others. First, it causes a decrease in strength, which is not too much of a hassle; but it may still be useful to know for contestants using often melee weapons. Second, and most importantly, the duration of its effects are very short. They may last for as little as 1 turn, to a maximum of 6 turns.

Two important things must be however noted:

  • The negation of Pain levels does not prevent the user from taking other forms of damage such as fractures, wounds and limb severing. It also does not prevent Bleeding.
  • It will not work if any damage is received in the HEAD group. Damage calculation is then done normally.

Even then, the inhalers may turn the tides for a contestant in a difficult situation. They have the advantage of having an unique shape - therefore they don't require identification.
