7.62x39mm (no ontology)
From Mazeworld
7.62x39mm (also known as 7.62x39mm M43 or 7.62mm Soviet) is a rifle cartridge designed by a team of Soviet engineers on request of the People's Commissariat for Armaments. The request was issued on July 15th 1943, and the cartridge began development in December 1943. Production began in March 1944, during which it was subjected to numerous tweakings, changes, and objections.
This cartridge originally employed a bi-metal case, made out of an alloy of steel and copper, as well as a 123 grain, copper-jacketed, mild steel core projectile, largely out of desire to re-use existing manufacturing equipment and save costs on the production of the new cartridge. The cartridge has first seen service when the Degtyarov RPD machine gun was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1945, soon followed by the Simonov SKS semi-automatic rifle. But the year 1949 marks the arrival of the most iconic and easily recognized 7.62x39mm firearm, if not the most famous firearm of all time; the now legendary Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle. The original AK-47 went through three generations, until 1956 where the more popular and most widespread AK variant came out: the AKM - M standing for "Modernized", reflecting improved and simplified manufacturing methods.
AK-patterned rifles, the vast majority of which are AKMs, or clones of the AKM (such as the Chinese Norinco Type 56) solidified the adoption of 7.62x39mm not simply as the new service rifle cartridge of the Soviet Union, but also of a large amount of fighting forces, regular and irregular, organized or not. Even when the Soviet Union decided to phase out the AKM in favor of the 5.45x39mm AK-74 in the year of 1974, the enduring reputation of the AKM continued, and with it the power of the 7.62mm Soviet cartridge.
Countless 7.62x39mm rifles have been produced, and with an estimated 100 million AK pattern rifles of some sort, the ubiquity of the cartridge needs not to be proven anymore. It is still the primary service rifle cartridge in many countries, and even modern Russia did not completely abandon their 7.62mm caliber, as recent production rifles such as the AK-100 series or the AK-12 still have 7.62x39mm variants. Outside of its military applications, it also found use among civilian shooters, as a potent and iconic cartridge suitable for target shooting, personal defense, and hunting.
In the Mazes, all 7.62x39mm ammunition is Boxer-primed and brass-cased, in order to facilitate handloading. While no military production cartridges in this caliber were produced with such materials, certain manufacturers have produced such ammunition for the civilian market. As a result, 7.62x39mm FMJ ammunition found in the Mazes is closer in design to civilian market ammunition, while still replicating as closely as possible the performance of the original 57-N-231 cartridge, albeit with a traditional lead core projectile instead of a mild steel core.
