5.45x39mm (also known as 5.45x39mm M74 or 5.45mm Soviet) is a rifle cartridge designed by a team of Soviet engineers in the early 1970s then introduced in 1974 as the new Soviet service rifle cartridge, alongside the rifle it was designed for, the AK-74. Following what was then an international trend of reducing the size of service rifle cartridges, 5.45x39mm directly descends from its larger parent, 7.62x39mm, being a cartridge that allows individual soldiers to carry more ammunition for a given total weight, much like 5.56x45mm NATO and 5.8x42mm.
The original load, type-designated 7N6 by the Soviets, featured a steel-cased, Berdan-primed cartridge with a 52.8 grain mild steel core FMJ bullet. More ammunition types were developed since, generally to match the development of 5.45mm platform firearms as they were submitted and adopted by the Soviet Union, such as the 7N10 with "enhanced penetration" bullet, the 7N22 with armor-piercing bullet, or the 7U1 subsonic designed to be used in suppressed AKs.
Note: Despite virtually all 5.45x39mm ammunition in real life using steel cases and Berdan primers, all 5.45x39mm ammunition is Boxer-primed and brass cased in order to facilitate handloading. The load used in the game is made to replicate as closely as possible the performance of the original 7N6 cartridge with the exception of the bullet (real life 7N6 bullets are 52.8 grain with mild steel core, MazeWorld 5.45x39mm FMJ bullets are 54 grain plain lead core).
