Welcome!

Welcome to MazeWorld.net; home of the MazeWiki, the information resource about the tabletop-style role-playing game known as MazeWorld.
MazeWorld, aside from being the name of the game, is the name of the realm in which your character progresses. Taken away from your original homeworld and pitted into this realm, you will have to go through its many and various rooms, where you will be able to find suitable weapons, appropriate clothing and armor, and useful items of many kinds, in order to fend off all of the menaces that will come in the way. The goal of every contestant is to retrieve the four Cardinal Amulets, by finding them in the depths of the Mazes, or earning them from one of many challenges. Those amulets are the key to reach the end and be granted your way back home. However, many adventures await, and the realm is inhabited by various creatures; some of them at war with each other. Build the equipment to suit your style, fulfill the objectives and complete the tasks of your choice, go as far as you are capable, and perhaps even set yourself your own challenges; it's all up to you. Will you join the Mazes?

  • Are you new? Read the Newcomer's Guide. If you would like to join us on IRC, click here! Make sure to read and understand the rules.
    • Additionally, check the guidelines for the (unofficial) #MzW-RP channel (DEPRECATED: Currently the channel doesn't exist - may or may not be remade in the future)
  • If you like the game, please consider making a donation to the author! The money will be used to provide more services and fund projects to make the game better and easier to reach to more players!
  • Meet the Staff; the people behind MazeWorld and the important figures.

Contribution board

Do you want to help and contribute to the game? Did you do something MazeWorld related and you want to show us? Here is a list of activities that are available:

  • Artists wanted to help illustrate the articles. Fanworks also appreciated!
  • Skilled web developer or people with relevant skills, to create a set of generators (preferably webpage-based) for the game (damage calculators, encounter generators with stats, equipment, weapon speccing, inventory, etc., and more...) - the use of which are intended to improve game flow and resolve creature generation faster.
  • Suggestions are always read and welcome. Head on over to our IRC channel if you have an idea to improve or add to the game.
  • STAFF JOBS
    • IRC moderators; 2 positions available.
    • Wiki editors for spellchecking, error fixing and content page creation; 1 position available.

To apply for any of these, send a message to the author. (contact methods available in the latter link)

What is MazeWorld?

MazeWorld: A realm

It must be noted that both the spellings 'Mazeworld' and 'MazeWorld' are valid. MzW is the shortened form.

MazeWorld (sometimes referred to as the Mazes) itself is a strange realm, said to be created by being who refer themselves to as the Game Masters, and where the very notions of time, space and reality are distorted and different from our world; so much that it is arguable Mazeworld may exist in its very own plane of existence rather than in the 'Universe' (or universes). The realm itself is mainly composed of thousands rooms and areas, including some more open "outside" areas, connected with each other using seemingly innocuous doors, stairways and trapdoors, with seldom access to wider, more open 'outside' areas. From the contestant's perspective, Mazeworld has no coherent layout, and crossing a door acts as a sort of passive teleportation, never sending into the same rooms each time.

According to the Game Masters, Mazeworld is "the world between all worlds, located in the Interloper of the Universes, through which anything that exists in any universe can come through", which may explain the variety of creatures and items that can be encountered inside the Mazes, and how contestants may end up here after their life in their respective homeworlds.

More in-depth information about what can be found in the Mazes is detailed in the categories above.

MazeWorld: A game

Mazeworld is the result of several years of thought, past concepts, and a general wish to create a reliable game with a lot of content, such as a high weapon variety, a feel of endlessness and a constant sense of danger. Over the years, it went through many tries, many game types and even many names - 2D platformer, computer RPG, RPG forum, all of the ideas failed to appeal to the author, until it became what it is: a tabletop-style RPG, but using the benefits brought by computers and the internet. The game is very simple, based on several text files, Excel sheets, Access databases, and bots with IRC scripts, which are used mainly for various applications of random number generation (dice rolls, list randomization...). Naturally, as a game that can be played by anyone with a computer, a keyboard and the internet, there is no compatibility issue, and we can reach out to players all around the world (and we do!)

The current form of Mazeworld has been created on February 10th, 2011. It has existed before then as a private game with simple notepad sheets and dice scripts on MSN using Plus! scripts, and so for a few months, but it was arguably in a conceptual stage, with a lot to improve and work on. 10/02/2011 marks the day the game went on IRC, which is the main way to play MazeWorld as of today, and the one I intended.

Read the Timeline of Mazeworld to know more about the past of the project.

MzW games are held by the author, which has grown from the smaller-scale games on MSN to a better organized format on IRC, as explained in the above linked article. For the moment, the author has no plans to port MzW to an actual computer game format, although he mentioned it could be a possibility, provided all the resources needed for such a project can be gathered. He has also considered training other people to become Game Masters so that more people could play when he can't assume his role as a GM, but has mentioned it wouldn't be until the game has matured enough in his eyes.

The purpose of this wiki is to serve as an encyclopedia about the game, for the author's and the players' needs. We hope it will serve your interests as a player, and will pique the curiosity of those who aren't players yet.
