4.2x30mm R is an unique cartridge specifically designed for the Golden Gun. Though it is small in diameter, the cartridge features a very long projectile, almost longer than the case itself, similar in profile to that of a spitzer bullet as found on rifle cartridges. The casing is entirely constructed out of gold and is designed to be fired once, then discarded - it usually fractures or splits after firing. The bullet is referred to as Armor Piercing/High Explosive or APHE ; it is made out of a steel layer, a gold jacket, and is filled with an internal firing pin and a highly explosive compound known as A-IX-1 (composed of 96% RDX and 4% wax to serve as a stabilizant).

These rounds are custom-made and not available on the retail market, and it is likely that such rounds are, in fact, the work of a single person in the Mazes.

Although it is not designed to be fired at great distances, this is likely intended, as the Golden Gun - the only weapon that can fire 4.2x30mm R cartridges - is intended to be a powerful assassination tool (being composed of five otherwise inconspicuous, albeit perhaps gaudy, items made out of, or plated with gold). In addition, the explosive nature of the projectile is made to confuse and mislead eventual law enforcers and investigators as to what exactly killed its potential victims.
