.44 Special (also referred to as .44 S&W Special, .44 Spc or .44 Spl, rarely 10.9x29mm R) is a pistol cartridge designed in 1907 by Smith & Wesson. To celebrate the dawn of the 20th century, Smith & Wesson introduced this caliber, reminiscent of the 19th century American frontier guns, where .44 and .45 caliber blackpowder cartridges were the most popular and the most efficient of their time.
.44 Special began life as a smokeless powder, which was then still a very new technology, with the intention of continuing the tradition of accurate and dependable large-caliber handgun cartridges. Enthusiasts and handloaders realized however that the .44 Special factory loads were not as powerful as they could potentially be, merely replicating the performance of the blackpowder .44 Russian, from which it is derived. Famous firearm enthusiast and cartridge designer Elmer Keith designed a number of hot handloads for .44 Special (loads that would certainly be termed +P and +P+ by modern standards), his experiments with the cartridge eventually resulting in the birth of the .44 Magnum, much the same way .357 Magnum was born out of very hot .38 Special loads.
