.357 SIG is a pistol cartridge developed in 1994 by Swiss firearms manufacturer SIG Sauer and ammunition manufacturer Federal Cartridge Company. It is essentially a cartridge based on the .40 S＆W, necked down to accept the same 9mm projectiles as 9x19mm Parabellum, intended to reproduce .357 Magnum (from a 4" barrel) performance in semi-automatic pistols. The result is a bottlenecked cartridge delivering very high muzzle velocity even in handguns. Favored by a number of law enforcement agencies in the world, it is primarily a cartridge employed in semi-automatic pistols, however it is starting to see some use in submachine guns, notably with the advent of the SIG MPX.
